Twisty's Asylum Escapades is a crazy, darkly fun action/adventure game about a lovable disembodied floating brain with a mouth full of razor sharp teeth who must tear through enemies and solve puzzles in order to escape from an insane asylum.
Eight years ago we decided we wanted to make a game. We had no real budget or experience in the field, but we did have intelligence, ambition and a lot of really strange ideas (though we didn't quite realize just how strange until we started getting feedback on those ideas later).
The game needed to be realistic in scope for a first project by a two man team (we may have overreached a bit on that point). But we also wanted to make something that we could be proud of, something that approximated the professional quality of games that we admired, and something that was distinctly ours (meaning surreal, campy and containing plenty of dark humor). We first publicly announce that we were in the process of developing the game on April 1, 2010 (I honestly forget when we first began development, but that's the first record I have of mentioning it publicly and after we had been developing for a while) and since then have gone through numerous testing phases, alpha and beta builds, and have continuously improved the graphics and gamplay. This latest version of TAE has been remastered specifically for its Steam release.
We chose to use Twisty, the Twisted Jenius mascot as the protagonist because it seemed appropriate for our first gaming project and we wanted something distinctive that would reflect our personality. We began with him and then designed the game from there, building upon the premise of his escape that was featured in the original animated site intro that we had created for TwistedJenius.com back in 2006. We hope that the game will prove to be a unique and entertaining experience for everyone who plays it. It's not every day that you get to step into the nonexistent shoes of a floating brain monster!
